The Zahrádka Primary School (Zahrádka = “Little Garden”)
is a special education school for pupils with multiple
handicaps. |

The school was founded in 1997 for the needs of the clients of the Zahrada
Integration Centre (Zahrada = “Garden”). Today, the school has six classes,
of which two offer preparatory instruction and three are rehabilitation
classes. One rehabilitation class is focused on teaching children with
autism. We also have a primary education class for older pupils with severe
combined handicaps.
All our pupils receive instruction according to an individual education plan,
which is created especially for the pupil by the classroom teacher in
cooperation with all others who work with the pupil (a special-education
teacher from the integration centre, physical therapist, children’s
psychologist, doctor, specialists in early care, alternative communication
and visual stimulation, a social worker etc.). At the very end, the IEP is
approved by the parents. |

Education is overwhelming individual, and is
supplemented by frequented celebrations and joint events.
We endeavour to integrate pupils into primary schools,
we visit outdoor schools and attend the theatre or other
performances.
Pupils in the rehabilitation and autistic classes are
taught using so-called structured teaching based on the
TEACCH programme. We respect each child’s individual
needs and use visualisation and structured activities to
promote the development of communication skills,
independent self-care, work activities and spatial
orientation. We work together with the Poradenské
středisko Asociace pomáhající lidem s autismem (Advisory
Centre for People with Autism) in Prague 14.
All our pupils receive instruction according to an
